About Founder Sergio Wu
Algarve Surf School & Camp was founded over 25 years ago when our Head Coach Sergio began teaching local kids how to surf on the beaches of Sagres.
Back then, surfing in the Algarve was still a well-kept secret. Long before Ericeira and Peniche became internationally known, before large surf camp networks arrived in Portugal, there was Algarve Surf School at the edge of Europe, in the little surfing town of Sagres, the End of the Old World.
His story is deeply woven into the history of Portuguese surfing. Sergio was the Head Coach of the Portuguese National Junior Surf Team and coached professional surfers such as Alex Botelho, Nic von Rupp and Miguel Mouzinho in their early years.
Today, he is the President of the Portuguese Association of Surf Schools and Head Coach for the Academy of Surf Instructors in Portugal, shaping the future of surf education nationwide.
Surfing keeps us young. It is a way of life that keeps us curious, grounded and connected to nature. After more than 25 years, our mission remains the same: to help people of all ages and levels fall in love with the ocean and feel confident in the water.
About the team
Our team is a mix of locals and travellers from all over the world, united by a shared love for surfing, Mother Nature and good times.
As one of the longest standing surf camps in Portugal, we hold ourselves to very high standards when it comes to hiring and training.
All surf instructors are ASI certified, the internationally recognised authority, and every new recruit goes through intensive in-house training. This ensures consistent teaching quality and deep knowledge of our surf spots, including their specific conditions and characteristics.
For our surf hostel, we carefully select ultra-personable, sociable team members with a strong commitment to first-class guest service. We believe that a great stay is created through people, not just facilities.
To us, our staff is family and we make sure everyone is supported and taken care of to the best of our abilities.
